Playoff Teams Vs Playoff Teams: Detailed Stats for West Teams

New, 2 comments

Today I have more detailed stats for games involving playoff opponents. There are two tables below. The first table looks at summary metrics such as Goals (For, Against, Differential) and Shots (For, Against, Differential). The second table looks at team percentages (Power Play %, Penalty Kill %, Save %, Shot %) when facing other playoff teams. (East data here)

Observations:

  • If you look at the Goal Differential numbers in games against playoff teams, Vancouver ranks first in the Western Conference.
  • If you look at Shot Differential the Chicago Blackhawks are just overwhelming other playoff teams with their offensive pressure.
  • Phoenix is the only top four team in the West with a negative Goal Differential when facing other playoff teams, while Detroit is the only bottom four playoff team with a positive goal differential--which team should be favored in this contest? A tough draw for story book season for Coyotes.
  • The Canucks and Red Wings both improved their GFA and GAA when playing tougher opponents this season.

Observations for Table 2:

In general most teams don't show much difference in their team Shot % or team Save % when you split the data out. However, we are more likely to see gaps in PP% and PK%.

  • Blackhawks Power Play was anemic versus other playoff clubs, while Nashville's Power Play was much BETTER against playoff teams.
  • The LA Kings and Avalanche PK were both rather porous versus good teams, the Chicago PK was better against post-season qualifiers.
  • Vancouver benefited from having both above average SV% and above average ST%.
  • Colorado had significantly better goaltending when facing non-playoff teams then it did against post-season qualifiers.

What is this PDO stat? It is a measure of luck. League wide SV% and ST% must add up to 100%. A few star level players show the ability to sustain higher than average SV and ST rates, over the long run, but at the team level only dynasty level teams can maintain a higher than average PDO over the long run of multiple seasons.

Ergo, if a team has a number over 100% suggests that a team has been fortunate, anything under 100% suggests they have been unlucky. When facing other playoff teams the San Jose, Vancouver and Kings had some good luck, while Nashville did not.
