Some quick crib-note pregame thoughts before tonights game. We're volunteering in the "Scub the Kovy/Kari References from Philips" effort, and some dude keeps pointing to those giant banners of Slava Kozlov.
COMPLETELY KIDDING. On to the notes.
Maybe our young Thrashers can take notes. Tonight they face a Colorado squad that had been tagged with the dreaded "rebuilding" label by many observers. The Avs, however, had different ideas for this season. Led by rookie coach Joe Sacco, they've played themselves into a dead heat with the Vancouver Canucks for the Northwest Division lead (yea, the 'nucks have the edge in total games won, but who's counting?). That's good enough for sixth place in the West. A big piece of the puzzle for the Avs has been the resurgence of goalie Craig Anderson - his 6 shutouts have him tied for 3rd in that category behind guys with names like Vokoun and Brodeur. Not to mention he's 7th in total wins and 8th in save percentage - all while facing the second highest number of shots in the league. Anyone else think it's a coincidence the Avs don't have ice girls? Me either. Rookie Matt Duchene has been solid for Colorado as well. Currently the freshman center is riding a four game point streak. The power play hasn't been particularly strong for the Avs - the team is 2 for 18 over their last five games. Given what we've seen of the Kovyless Thrashers, these two teams should provide some pretty entertaining hockey.
