With exciting back-to-back wins over New Jersey and Buffalo, the Thrashers are now 4-1. I assume this is the best record in team history after 5 games. The hot start has produced some eye popping overall rankings for the club.
Right now, the team sits in 6th place in the Eastern Conference and 2nd in their Division. They rank 14th overall in the NHL despite having played the fewest number of games so far.
The Thrashers are tied for #1 in the NHL in offense (Goals For Average), and on defense (Goals Against Average) they rank 10th out of the 30 teams. The special teams have been very special indeed. The Thrashers are #1 in Power Play Percentage (38%!!!) and 8th in Penalty Kill Percentage (85%).
The team Save Percentage is a spectacular .926 which puts them 5th in the NHL. They lead the NHL in Shot Percentage as well. The big downer is shots where they rank just 27th in official Shots on Goal For and 29th in Shots Against.
In individual stats, Ilya Kovalchuk has 7 goals which ranks him 2nd in the NHL behind Ovechkin. Rich Peverly's 4 goals puts him in a huge tie for 15th in goal scoring. Kovalchuk is 2nd in ice time among forwards.
Clearly the Thrashers are hot. The team is on pace for 131 standing points. I can't imagine that they can sustain this level of play forever, but it sure is fun to watch.
