This post talking about McArthur doesn’t give me the warm fuzzies on this trade: http://www.diebytheblade.com/2010/2/9/1302721/sabres-statistics-determine-studs.

HIs scoring has increased every year and Hockey Prospects has him rated as a 7.0. Looks like he’ll fit in well with JA’s system. Too bad that couldn’t unload Kozlov in the trade.

Kozlov didn’t like Buffalo. I doubt he’d waive the NTC to go there.

by godsendjen on Mar 3, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Trade him or waive him. I don’t care where he goes as long as he goes.

by SilverRubicon on Mar 3, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Can you waive a player with a NTC? I guess yes….but they can’t go anywhere but home?

by godsendjen on Mar 3, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

No it hasn’t. If you crunch his current numbers to 71 games (what he played last year) he’s on track to duplicate it.

Yawn. Not impressed. Not really seeing the point. More of DW looking for a 3rd line guy to do a 2nd line guy’s job and that has not worked in the past here. At least he didn’t cost much, but he’s a pretty darn mediocre “prospect”.

by Zontar on Mar 3, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not always negative. I liked the Lehtonen trade. We didn’t give up much but acquiring a 3rd line player isn’t exactly “just what the doctor ordered”. And keep in mind that Buffalo runs a fairly cheap organization and MacArthur was making barely over the minimum as an upcoming RFA. They traded a regular for very little in return. Maybe Buffalo simply didn’t want to pay him more money this summer to re-sign him but I’m also thinking that it didn’t see him as a big part of their future. He’s OK, but that’s all.

by Zontar on Mar 3, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, if that is Don’s idea of “being a buyer” then I’m not impressed.

I’m happy there was no Coburn for Zhitnik deal done. Would have liked to have seen Kozlov and Armstrong dealt, though.

Although the deadline just passed....

a number of deals could still be announced. Last year deals were being announced until 5/6 PM.

If this is another guy that was in Ruff's doghouse

And he turns out to appreciate the freedom of JA’s system, we could have a similar outcome to the Afinogenov trade. Looking at his WHL/AHL scoring trends, given his age (see Falconer, I’m learning your lessons !), he has definitely 2nd line potential, and it’s not like our LW is crowded…

I like this move… Too bad we didn’t find anybody for our dead weights (Kozlov, White).

Not unloading Kozlov is the only downside for today’s activity. I wasn’t expecting Atlanta to do much and they didn’t. I do wonder how the lines and bodies will be assembled. It appears that there may be players on the way down to Chicago or to the waiver wire.

by SilverRubicon on Mar 3, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

I’m thinking Boulton is a goner. Todd White’s goal last night might have saved him from the chopping block. Kozlov very well might be waived.

by ou812jay8 on Mar 3, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Barring any after hours announcements, I think DW decided to pay back Kozlov for his interview. DW holds grudges, as Slava Kozlov just found out.

by Zontar on Mar 3, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah but despite anything he may have said, why would you keep someone that you’re not playing and wants out? At least trade him for lousy picks, anything really….

The last thing you want

is players talking about one of their own being wronged and thinking they could be next. Especially, this organization. Even if Kozlov deserves it.

Working on Trade Analysis

on MacArthur and Artyukhin. Probably will take two hours, look for it early evening.

Sabres and C-Mac fan here...

Im a little upset to see him go. Mainly because Ive had his jersey since he was in the AHL, but more because he has offensive upside. Like someone before mentioned, his scoring has gone up every year. Just not that good in the defensive zone. Could be similar to Max, where yes they were both in Lindys doghouse, offensive talent, less than good in the D zone. Ill probably check back at the end of the season to see what you guys thought of him, since his time in Buffalo he was one of my favorites.

Kind of like pulling for the underdog player that most others dont like. Hope you guys enjoy him and he plays well for you… just not against us. haha.

im just glad we werent big buyers. even if these guys dont pan out, we didnt lose much. these are just tiny upgrades at very low cost. i like what DW has done here.

A little surprised Kozlov was not moved for a late round pick to a team looking for someone on the PP or that Army was not moved to get a better RFA with offensive upside but not surprised that DW did not put on the trader Don cape. If Mac can step into this system and increase his productivity a little it is by no means a terrible move.

I'm content

Kozzie may be unhappy here but he probably wouldn’t waive that NTC for just any team that’s sniffing either. It’s the usual deadline day stuff – almost impossible to know who offered what.

I have to say I’m glad Don didn’t do the fire sale. Being committed to being a play-off calibre team doesn’t just mean adding new pieces, it also means retaining the assets you need to go forward. I’m tired of selling stuff off every season and we didn’t do that here other than the two obvious players that had to be dealt with.

Right now the Thrashers are tweeners – we don’t suck but we’re not elite either. Not worth chucking assets for impending UFAs right now and there weren’t many long-term options out there (in fact looks like DW got one of the few).

It would mean a LOT to the players and the fan base to make the play-offs this year and the team has a chance to do that. I have zero problem keeping guys like Kozzie, Army, or Max that we might lose this off-season to try for that play-off berth. It’s not like we’re passing up on a guaranteed possible first-round pick. Besides we’ve already got a pretty good prospect and draft pick pool going. At this point the best thing to get this team is some success and pride (and hopefully local buzz) moving forward.
