Sportsnet is reporting Atlanta has signed the NHL veteran but no one else has the story so far. If accurate it raises many questions. Is another Thrashers defenseman to be dealt soon? Would he come up and serve as a mentor to Bogosian? Or did Sportsnet simply misunderstand recent announcement of Chelios 3rd PTO with Chicago Wolves.

Not really seeing how this makes any sense, nor does it seem to be something Waddell would want to do. I can’t say that with 100% certainty as Waddell is completely and utterly obsessed with defensemen, but I’m sure it’s a misunderstanding of his 3rd PTO. Chelios turned down a chance to play with Phoenix earlier in the season so he could stay in Chicago. Sorry folks, but realistically I’m not really seeing playing with the Thrashers as being all that much better. He’s got one of his sons living with him in Chicago and he’s close to his parents there. Just not really seeing how this is very likely to happen.

Looks like I'm wrong!

BlueLand Blog says it’s official. Chelios is a Thrasher.

Color me puzzled on this one. There must be some deals on the way. Could Kubina have waived his no trade clause?

makes sense to me

They’re willing/trying to trade Slava for a bag of pucks if need be, who does that leave on the team as a veteran Stanley Cup winner? Plus are we that confident that Schubert or Popovic are truly better than him even at 48?

Worst case scenario he mentors some people for a few months, helps in the locker room, and goes back home.

im pretty confident that theyre better than him at 48. the last thing we need is another Zhitnik or Klee plaguing our zone, especially when we just picked up a guy who takes dumb penalties. i hope he stays in chicago.

Adding to the puzzlement...

AJC reports that Chelios must clear waivers and he may simply just stay in Chicago. I read recently that he had to have a real contract, not a 25 game tryout, to play in the playoffs. Is all this simply to get him on the Wolves’ roster for the playoffs? Will he be called up? Will some other team put in a claim and thwart this? I don’t know what to think.

He’ll be a call-up in case of injury. Keep in mind, Valabik, Popovic, and Schubert have all missed substantial time this season.
