Thrashers Acquire Artyukhin for Oystrick, Conditional Pick
We'll update with info on the pick whenever it's available. Discuss below. Minor deal, obviously...
For what it's worth, I remember seeing Artyukhin playing with the Bolts and thinking... "God, that's a guy I'd love to have here." He's a giant. He's enormous. He hits like crazy. Is he more than a depth winger? Nah, probably not. But he's managed to score a few points while playing very, very limited ice time in Anaheim. With the addition of Oduya and the play of Kulda and Postma, Oystrick was done as a Thrasher.
We seem to make this sort of deal with Anaheim frequently. Donny's got a friend out west...

I like it, but now I’m wondering what they have in store for the next few days, b/c if you bring him on, who do you bench, or does that mean DW and Dudley have someone they plan on trading to free up a spot to be filled by Artyukhin.
Afinogenov will almost certainly be leaving. Ditto Kozlov. Armstrong is a “maybe.” That leaves us with something like:
Little – Antro – Bergfors
Kane – Peverley – Armstrong
Arty – Reasoner – Machacek
Boulton – Slater – Thorburn
Or am I forgetting somebody? ;-)
White would probably fit there rather than Machacek. If Armstrong gets traded, White would replace him instead. Lots of permutations.
I have seen several comments from Ducks fans talking about how fast he is. He will be a nice upgrade to the bottom six.
He takes dumb penalties…both Tampa and Duck fans agree on that.
Didn't mention this, but...
Anaheim doesn’t have an AHL team, so Oystrick stays with the Wolves until/unless they call him up.
Does anyone know what the condition is?

6th rounder if he re-signs in ATL this summer.

good move
i like this move for several reasons. first, it’s very low risk, low to medium reward. oystrick wasnt going anywhere anyways and if he resigns a 6th pick is nothing. also, we can try arty out for a while and try to find him a line with some chemistry to see if hes worth extending an offer to in the offseason. but we definitely needed someone else other than antropov who’s intimidating and has a big net presence. i hope this is the extent of our buying, and now we can start moving some more pieces for the future.
The only good I see from this is that it gets rid of one of the Wolves’ defensemen that the Thrashers really had no use for. Artyukhin is hardly a game changer. I suppose that Todd White’s reign of terror is over for this season now, but he’s not going to put any pucks in the net. He adds size and nothing else. Those who watch him play a lot say that he fools you because he can skate and seems to have decent hands, but he never seems to score. Really, timmyf? You get excited about this kind of player? Let’s see if he stays out of the penalty box enough to add an real value.
I liked him in the games I saw him play against the Thrashers. That’s a very, very limited set.
But yes. I’m capable of liking players for things other than scoring. I like Armstrong, remember! ;-)

Size
Arty helps put size up there. Kovy, as some of you might recall, was a big guy, at around 220/230 lbs. Bergfors will never be that big, so Evgeny helps , even if they don’t play on the same line….
This trade has the fingerprints of both Rick Dudley and Don Waddell all over it; Dudley likes big, physical grinders, Waddell satisfies his lust for European (Russian) players.
