Thrashers Salary Cap Number Near $50 Million

Now that the NHL roster is nearly final, we can take a look at how the salaries total up. I used the phrase "nearly final" because Lehtonen will start on the IR and whenever he is healthy again someone will have have to depart (assuming there are no other injuries). So it is likely that one of these salaries will come off the books during October.

Another unknown are performance bonuses for players on Entry Level Contracts (ELC). In the case of Zach Bogosian and Evander Kane, they both have a base salary of under $1 million, but that could surpass $3 if they trigger all their incentive clauses. Ondrej Pavelec, Boris Valabik and Bryan Little have much smaller incentive clauses.

Star-divide

During the 2008-09 NHL Training Camp, the Thrashers were actually below the cap floor excluding Zach Bogosian's $2+ million performance bonuses. However, the addition of Mathieu Schneider and his $5.6 million cap hit, put the team on a path to spend closer to $44-45 million cap number. By trading Schneider weeks before the trade deadline, the final number was probably closer to $43 million.

The organization has made a major addition in payroll in the range $6-8 million over the previous year. I wouldn't be surprised if Zach Bogosian takes another step forward and earns much of his bonus money. If that is the case, both the Thrashers cap payroll and the actual payroll could both break the $50 million mark.

Another factor for the Thrashers is that they currently stand right around the NHL mid-point. It appears very likely that the team will finish above the midpoint--which means they will not qualify for Pool B for NHL Revenue Sharing money (For a more complete explanation of the Revenue Sharing formula go here).

Well at least they didn’t overpay by much for Afinogenov.

Amazing price tag…I was predicting $1.5. If Kovy can keep him motivated, he may put up some numbers.

800k for a guy who may not even get 40 points and offers no defensive upside is pretty steep, I think.

He’s another big name, low impact project player.

Dude we pay more than that for Jim Slater. Max is a steal.

Gotta figure Kane will mostly come off the books – doubt he stays around past the 9 game mark.

Too bad Russians aren’t as fan crazy as the Japanese are. We’d have a whole section of Russians waiving flags and buying jerseys this season. Ichiro would be jealous.

I’ve seen Russians at the games, but the truth is that the Russian expat community just isn’t all that large in Atlanta. Unless things have changed since I last checked, we have zero Russian restaurants in Atlanta unless you want to count Nikolai On The Roof. If nobody cares enough to open an ethnic restaurant, that’s a sure sign that your community isn’t very large. I think we may have more Ukrainians in Atlanta than Russians.

Gotta agree with WINGZ_25. It’s not difficult at all to name players who will get paid more than Afinogenov and accomplish less. And at $800,000 the Thrashers can afford for him to be a total bust, although hopefully he won’t be.

You know of scoring line players that ‘accomplish’ ~35 points regularly in the NHL? Not on playoff teams, you don’t.

Are you going to the media lunch today?

by Whalers on Sep 30, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

No. Not considered media by the Thrashers last time I asked. Perhaps I should ask again.

As much love as you’ve been getting lately from Ben Wright, maybe you should submit a formal application. Your blog is far and away the single most authoritative Thrashers literature out there. You are the de facto Thrashers expert in the media — you should definitely be given creds.

There you go, don’t give him any reason to gloat! :p
