New Blog: Once A Metro covering Red Bull New York!

New to the Atlanta Area.

Hi, I am a huge hockey fan that will be moving to Atlanta next year because I will be attending college there!  I am very excited, but i have a few questions.  (I would like to also warn you I will gladly contribute, but the New York Rangers are my first love.  Sorry guys)  First off, you guys can have Nik Antropov.  He'll get you some goals (25 or more if you are lucky) but he's slower than you think and needs to use his size more.  Well enough about that; here are my questions!

1. Does anyone know if there are college student discount tickets for Thrashers games?

2. Do you thnk Ilya Kovalchuck will resign next season?

3. Evander Kane? Calder winner or bust?

4. Can Kari Lehtonen stay healthy?

5. Besides Kane, who do you think will be the breakout star of this season?

Sorry guys, just wanted to know a little bit about the hockey culture I'll be around for four years!

1. There are such discounts, but since I am not a student, I know nothing about them.

2. Yes, but you mean “re-sign” and not “resign” (not the same thing).

3. Neither. He’ll be a very good player in the future, but if he manages to score 20+ goals this season, I’ll be amazed. The jump between juniors and the NHL is huge. Ask Bryan Little.

4. 70% chance no, 30% chance yes. While I think that every now and then he may have a healthy season, I no longer believe he will ever have 2 healthy seasons back to back and he’ll be hurt a significant portion of his time in the league.

5. I guess Bogosian in that the rest of the league will finally figure out exactly how great he is. His late season play didn’t get noticed much outside of Atlanta and caused him to fly under the radar. I’m not expecting anyone else on the roster to do anything far above what they’ve done before, so I don’t see Peverley scoring 30 goals or anything like that.

The official message boards at http://www.atlantathrashers.com might be of interest to you. Do note that there’s an awful lot kool aid drinking going on there. And a lot of people get angry if you dare say anything negative (they don’t like the truth). The Rangers are probably the most hated NHL team by a majority of Thrashers fans. Personally I have no problems with the Rangers other than disliking Sean Avery a lot, but I seem to be in the minority on that. Buffalo Sabres fans are the worst I’ve ever dealt with by far. Some jerk fans of the Rangers do come to the games, but I think that most fans are OK and Buffalo has a lot more ill-manned fans that come.

The student discounts are pretty good. You can get tickets that are usually ~$38 for $15 I think, or at least it used to be that way. Two years ago you had to wait until game day and buy them at the ticket window, but I think last year they changed that and allowed you to buy them in advance. If you don’t want to go to the window you can call one of the team sales reps and buy them over the phone and they will leave them at will-call for you.

Unfortunately you won’t be the only Ranger fans at games. Many Atlanta fans are Atlanta fans second and “fans of the team they grew up with” first. That is just a natural byproduct of hockey in a southern town full of northern transplants.
