Everyone’s focussed on the Phil Kessel trade. But a far more costly transaction for the Leafs in the short term was that which sent Pavel Kubina to Atlanta for Garnet Exelby.

Disagree

The theory behind the trade itself wasn’t a bad move since it opened the way for the Leafs to sign Beauchemin and Komisarek. Where it falls apart is in the use of Exelby (heretofore known as the ‘overuse’ of Exelby) and the trouble Beauchemin and Komisarek have had bedding into the team.

Good point.

The thought process behind the trade was ok, and XLB fits in with the rough and tumble blue-line Burke wanted. But I’m not really sure if they properly scouted X’s amazing ability to be out of position to make a hit, misread plays…

XLB’s an outstanding team player and locker room guy, and he is wonderful in the community, so at least you got that.

Out of curiosity, and because I’m lazy, how many GP does X have so far this season?

The trade was Kubina for cap space and a shot at Exelby who isn’t a stud prospect but isn’t a horrible depth player.

That cap space brough in Mike Komisarek and Francois Beauchemin. Komisarek has been amazing, Beauchemin hasn’t impressed yet.

“Komisarek has been amazing”.

I guess you and I have a different definition of what “amazing” means. I’d guess based on your comment that you are yet another in the endless number of hockey fans who really doesn’t trust those defensemen who actually have offensive skills. This is the guy who is better than Bogosian for the US national team. Really? All it takes is going -9 and getting ZERO points in 16 games and you’re just about a lock? Does his complete uselessness as an offensive player negate whatever value he supposedly brings for his defense? I don’t know, but I’d bet he is seriously overrated by just about everybody.

No, Exelby is a pretty bad depth player. He really brings nothing to the table. He can block a few shots, he gets caught out of position on his hits sometimes and he is about as bad an offensive player as you can possibly be and still play in the NHL. That last one alone makes him the darling of some fans eyes.

hildymac – Exelby has played 10 games, has no points (Wow! He’s as good as Komisarek for sure.) and is -7. He’s had exactly ONE shot on goal. I’d call him a perfect d-man for a lot of fans.

Yeesh.

That’s worse than he did here. Of course, Wilson has enough sense to bench his butt, while Exelby was constantly played because we had no one else here in Atlanta.

I understand what you’re saying, Chemmy, about the cap dump. I just think that Burke could have dumped the space and gotten a better defenseman from another team (not that I’m complaining). Ex isn’t the most solid stay at home defenseman ever, and since his concussions, he’s been less than willing to throw down the gloves.

Garnet Exelby

Hey Leafs fan: tell me what you think about Exelby when he turns over the puck in his own zone and the other team scores off of it.

Agree

Circle gets the square…

… and the Leafs get the AHLer.
