Ilya Kovalchuk has just taken the practice ice for the Thrashers. The captain, who suffered a broken bone in his foot less than three weeks ago, is dressed and skating... He was expected to miss four to six weeks after the injury.

I’m glad he’s skating again but being back this soon makes me a little concerned that it might be too early and he could re-aggrivate the fracture.

Captain-superstar or not, I can’t imagine the trainers/coach/organization risking an injury aggravation for him to return a couple days early. The guy just heals fast… or everyone involved is inept. Which even in Atlanta is unlikely.

My concern about him playing against the Rangers is that Avery and Bashear are both dirty players and I’d expect both of them to try to “test” Kovy’s foot with slashes and such. I’m a lot less worried about the Kings trying to exploit the situation than I am the Rags.

I seem to recall someone saying that because it was a “non weight bearing bone” the key question would be his ability to tolerate pain in terms of his return date.

From Vivlamore
“Anderson said Kovy was a little sore after skating the past two days. Called him a "game-time decision" for Thursday against the Rangers. I asked if he was still 95 percent sure he would play. Anderson said, ‘Maybe 90 percent now.’”

Except that 90% is now 0% – Kovy won’t play Thursday.

I just read the flight got delayed and then he decided to join the team. Apparently, he’s back to being a game time decision.

Kevin Allen with some (Not Really) News:

Latest Thrashers’ update: Kovalchuk is definitely going to try to play against the NY Rangers.

(emphasis mine)

Being a Thrashers fan - it's kind of like being punk rock in a hick town.

I don’t know where you heard this, but your source is good! It wasn’t until this afternoon, many hours after you posted the above, that I saw any confirmation of what you said.
