First Thrashers Game!
I spent my evening at Philips Arena tonight and it appears I couldn't have picked a better time to enter Blueland! What a game.. Since this was my first game, I was on the outside looking in on a few instances tonight and to help alleviate my ignorance, can some of you vets help me out?
1) During the anthem, what's the history behind shouting "NIGHT"? Something about the Atlanta Knights I assume? If so, isn't that a slight against the Thrashers? Why go to a Thrasher game and shout for a team that's long gone?
2) I heard the fans behind the TB goal chanting some kind of rehearsed group heckle that ended in "YOU SUCK!" but I couldn't make out anything preceding it.
3) On that "Unleash the Fury" video, what is that clip they play after Tom Green screams Unleash the Fury? Everybody was cheering so loud, I couldn't make that out either.

1. Between the Flames and the Thrashers a team called the Atlanta Knights played here. They yelled “Knights” at those games and somewhere along the way fans decided it was appropriate to yell “Knights” at Thrashers games too. I’m not a fan of the practice…but I think it is here to stay.
2. That group is the “Nasty Nest” and they primarily sit up in 320. They do a typical Goalie name Goalie name….you suck and they also do a you can’t play here get off the ice and buy me a beer chant. Feel free to drop by their website (nastynest.net) or a weekend tailgate in the gulch where they will get you up to speed on the chants.
3. I don’t remember the order of the clips…even though they are the same every time. You can go to the team’s website and watch all of the jumbotron clips though so if you really want to know have at it.

Bringing up the ‘Knights’ thing is would start a flame war on any of the message boards. I personally think it’s kind of cool b/c it represents a tradition of hockey in Atlanta. Since the city gets knocked so much for being a non-traditional market, it’s a reminder to me that there really are hockey roots in Atlanta — they go back as old as I do. :) But at the same time, I think half the people shouting had never been to a Knights game. Ah, well.

i dont see anything wrong with recognizing the knights. they were beloved by atlanta fans, and i think it’s a good tradition.
i think they play varsity blues after unleash the fury but im not sure about the sequence either (could also be the clip from blazing saddles).
the goalie chant is tacky and is something a group of 10 yr olds would do. not a fan of that.
i hope you come back to many more games. its going to be an exciting year.

Saddles
Must’ve been Blazing Saddles by the look of the actor in the clip. :-P
I’ll definitely be back! Absolutely loved it. Kovalchuk is a god out there. He’d be a Hart Trophy candidate/winner if he had some talent around him in previous years.

No kidding!
I had an awesome time! I grew up a Hawks fan and actually went to the game last year here in ATL, though I wouldn’t call it my first Thrashers game because I was cheering on my Hawks but this was the first time as a Thrashers fan I guess you could say.
There’s something to be said about being at a game at Philips. MUCH more personality than the United Center.

Yeah, I just went to my first Blackhawks home game like 10 days ago. The United Center looks like a high school gym compared to Philips. Granted it was a great time, even in preseason — and I think the in-game “entertainment” at Thrashers games is a little overdone and distracts from the game, the reason I’m there — but the experience of walking around Philips and the feeling in the bowl is just awesome, something I’ve never seen in a sporting venue before.
The goal song at Blackhawks games >>>>>> ours, though. :)

I can’t make up my mind on the Hawks goal song. I prefer hard/classic rock songs at hockey games but it’s begun to grow on me. Like a tumor…

It’s actually pretty hard, The Fratellis are kind of Scottish punk rock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ-ltw4ux3o And it was really, really fun to sing at the game. :)

hold up...
My dad has season tickets to the ‘Hawks, and I’m in love with not the goal song, but their goal horn. IMO best one in the NHL. (BUF and NSH are similar) Ours is cool and all, but the history of the old Stadium horn makes it that much better.
Only downside is if you score too much it won’t work (see http://www.faniq.com/blog/Chicago-Blackhawks-Score-So-Many-Times-They-Broke-The-Goal-Horn-Blog-15695 )

Totally agree
I like the deeper horns. Not air raid sirens.

San Jose’s horn is awesome. Wish ours wasn’t so ordinary. Always feel like counting our goals with the horn is distracting.
Surprised nobody has tried an old steam train sounding horn.

wasnt amstel light using the song before the hawks??

pfft
SJ’s is just a deep one-note honker.
nastiest (as in cool kind of sick): minnesota. its the thrashers’ plus a little buzzer type sound, fits the name of the team really… wild

that's one deep note
:) seriously, it sounds like satan yawning. and i don’t mean miroslav.

actually
i wish i had access to the people who put these horns together. it’s all about what kind of chord you’re making that gives a horn its character. ottawa’s is pretty cool, but it would be a lot meaner if it wasn’t so high pitched. sounds like a 7th chord. would be neat to come up with a few unusual possibilities and put it to fan vote.

hmmm
I can think of two horns off the top of my head that are major chords, Dallas and Pittsburgh.
I’m no music geek-tard, but I think Atlanta, Florida and Minnie are all the same basic two note horn (F and G#, I tried it :) ) except FL and MN add another note to it, I think making it a diminished chord? I’m not sure…
Music guys, I know you’re out there somewhere, help us out!

thinking. .
if it was the guy in the black suit saying “you do that voodoo that you do so well” that was blazing saddles. other clips are from braveheart, american pie, and i cant think of anymore right now.
you should prolly go ahead and purchase expensive season tickets and/or a suite for the year.

Yup, it's Blazing Saddles
I found it Hadley Lamarr
I’m actually considering purchasing one of those 11-game plans or whatever they are if I can talk my wife into it. Therein lies the challenge.
