Thrashers Recall Krog; New Practice Lines
According to the Blueland Blog, the Atlanta Thrashers have recalled Jason Krog from the AHL's Chicago Wolves. Krog has 1 goal and 6 assists in 8 games this year for the struggling Wolves; his 7 points are 2nd on the team behind Spencer Machacek's 8. At +3, Krog is tied with forwards Tim Stapleton and Andrew Kozek for 2nd in Plus-Minus, behind only defenseman and freak-of-nature Chris Chelios.
The new Thrashers lines in practice are currently (but perhaps not expected to stay as):
Evander Kane - Rich Peverley - Colby Armstrong
Slava Kozlov - Todd White - Maxim Afinogenov
Jim Slater - Marty Reasoner - Bryan Little
Eric Boulton - Jason Krog - Chris Thorburn
Don't worry, Nik Antropov is okay: he was given a day to rest a nagging groin injury. He isn't likely to miss any time.
More after the jump...
To me, the big question is who keeps a spot when Nik Antropov returns? Krog or Slater? By most accounts, Jason Krog is more of a scorer than Slater, though he's never shown the ability to net goals in the NHL. He has 22 goals in 202 NHL games, mostly with the Ducks over two seasons before the lockout. Slater, on the other hand, has 31 goals in 275 NHL games, a rate slightly better than Krog's.
Honestly, I don't know who will end up playing. If I had to guess today, here's what I think our lines might look like come Thursday:
Evander Kane - Nik Antropov - Maxim Afinogenov
Slava Kozlov - Todd White - Bryan Little
Rich Peverley - Marty Reasoner - Colby Armstrong
Eric Boulton - Jim Slater - Chris Thorburn
I think Jason Krog will be here for depth and may see time if, unexpectedly, Nik Antropov can't play. He could just as easily play in the 4th line center spot, though, and since that's where he's currently practicing, don't count him out for Thursday. Discuss below!

Boo!
VERY poor choice. Maybe Anderson had a say in this (“Krog was great for me in Chicago! That guy can play!” I can just hear it now.). If so, he’ll find out why Krog has not been able to stay in the NHL and why even having future Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr as a linemate wasn’t enough to get Krog able to produce points in the NHL.
Krog may be subject to waivers if they want to send him down. I’m not sure but I think that’s the case. I’m not sure how much of a worry that is though.

Krog has gone through waivers a million times so I doubt that is much of a concern. They probably brought him in because he is familiar with Anderson’s system. Personally, I would have brought up Stapleton or one of the younger guys to see what they can do rather than Krog- whose window of opportunity is pretty much gone by. Its probably a moot point though as he’ll likely just take Slater’s spot in the pressbox.

Some thoughts on Krog
I know I could have added this to the main story, but I figured I’d comment a bit on Krog. There’s no denying that he has hockey talent, but he’s long been billed as a ‘tweener. My only hope that he can perform well this time is his familiarity and success (at the AHL level) in Anderson’s system. Would he be a 20-goal scorer (equivalent)? Nah, probably not. But if he can net a couple while he’s here and play a defensively-sound game, he’d be worthwhile.
Krog seems to get claimed on waivers frequently, so there is a significant chance that he’ll get scooped up when we send him back down. Remember: he used to be a Thrasher but was claimed by the Rangers (I think). He eventually made his way back.
More soon on this, I’m sure.

Wow those practice lines look like 52 they were drawn out a hat. That’s quite a scramble.

I think the idea was to keep lines somewhat stable while Antro is out, but yeah, strange.
I’m curious to see what you think we’ll put on the ice Thursday.

Ah, so we keep the “Russian” line intact.
I woulda put Kane on the top line just to see what he can do.

I think Kane will play with Max and Nik.

No, they said he was staying on the Peverley line.

Interesting. Where’d you see that? I suppose it’s possible, as Kane-Peverley-Armstrong has really been our best line all year. (Kovalchuk has been our best player, but the rest of his line hasn’t performed very well.)

Anderson said in the post-game scrum against San Jose that he did not want to make another hole on a productive line since Kovy is out. Kaner-Pevs-Armstrong will be a line until the wheels fall off.

Yeah, it’s looking more like Antropov won’t play, so Kane-Peverley-Armstrong is looking more likely. Kozlov-White-Afinogenov and Slater-Reasoner-Little. Yikes. Krog on the 4th.
